Key Ingredients for Chocolate Covered Oreos

Creating the perfect chocolate covered Oreos can feel like an art form, and it all starts with selecting the right ingredients. Every component plays a vital role in achieving that delightful balance of crunch and sweetness.

  • Oreos: The star of the show! Classic Oreos have the ideal texture and flavor to pair with chocolate. Feel free to choose between the standard or double-stuffed versions based on your preference for creaminess.

  • Chocolate: A good quality chocolate makes all the difference. I recommend using either dark or milk chocolate, depending on your taste. Dark chocolate offers a rich flavor, while milk chocolate brings a sweeter vibe to your treats.

  • Crisco or Coconut Oil: When melting chocolate, adding a little fat helps achieve a smoother coating. Crisco creates a glossy finish, while coconut oil introduces a subtle flavor that complements the chocolate.

  • Sprinkles or Toppings: Optional, but why not jazz it up? Adding sprinkles, crushed nuts, or even a drizzle of white chocolate elevates the visual appeal and adds texture.

Each of these ingredients contributes to the overall experience of your delicious chocolate covered Oreos, ensuring a treat that satisfies every sweet tooth!

Cooking Tips and Notes for Chocolate Covered Oreos

Creating chocolate covered Oreos can morph a simple snack into a delightful dessert. However, achieving that perfect shiny finish and smooth coating requires attention to a few key techniques.

Melting Chocolate Perfectly

To melt your chocolate effectively, opt for high-quality chocolate chips or bars, as they melt evenly and provide a rich flavor. A double boiler is ideal, but if you don’t have one, using a microwave works too:

  • Microwave method: Heat your chocolate in short bursts of 15-20 seconds, stirring in between to prevent burning.
  • Double boiler method: Place chocolate in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, allowing gentle heat to do the work.

Dipping Techniques

Dipping your Oreos can either make or break the visual appeal of your chocolate covered Oreos. Here’s how to do it like a pro:

  • Use a fork or a dipping tool to lower each Oreo into the melted chocolate.
  • Ensure it’s fully submerged, then lift it out and let excess chocolate drip back into the bowl.
  • Place the dipped Oreos on parchment paper for easy removal once set.

How to Prevent Chocolate from Hardening Too Soon

It can be frustrating if your chocolate thickens too quickly while dipping. Here’s how to keep it smooth:

  • Keep the melted chocolate warm on low heat or leave it over the double boiler as you work.
  • If it starts to seize, stir in a teaspoon of coconut oil or vegetable shortening to restore its fluidity.

By following these tips, you’ll create shiny, delectable chocolate covered Oreos that everyone will love!

Description

Delicious chocolate-covered Oreos that are perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 package oreo cookies (about 36 cookies)
  • 24 ounces candy melts (*see note)
  • Sprinkles (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare baking sheet. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper. Set aside.
  2. Melt chocolate. Melt chocolate according to package directions. I do this in my microwave in 15-second increments, and stir until smooth. I like to melt two different kinds of chocolate (white and dark chocolate in two separate bowls) but you can use just one type of chocolate. Before dipping, you can also place some parchment under the bowl of chocolate so if any chocolate drips it’s quick to clean up.
  3. Dip the Oreos. Using a fork, place one oreo into the bowl of melted chocolate. Flip over the oreo, so it gets completely covered. Lift the oreo out of the chocolate with the fork, and tap on the side of the bowl and shake it gently back and forth letting the excess drip off into the bowl. Set onto the baking sheet.
  4. Decorate. If adding sprinkles, sprinkle on now before chocolate hardens. Or instead of adding sprinkles, you can drizzle on a second chocolate. Let the first chocolate cool, then drizzle on an alternate chocolate (so if dipping in dark chocolate, then I drizzle on white chocolate, but you can use the same type of chocolate or skip the drizzle). Let the cookies sit until completely dry.
